Cold Metal Transfer (CMT)

CMT is a welding process by Fronius that changes the game for anyone working with thin sheet metal, aluminium, or applications where post-processing simply takes up too much time. The principle is clever. the welding wire doesn't just move forward, it's also actively retracted the moment a short circuit occurs. This happens at a frequency of up to 170 times per second. The result? A stable arc, minimal heat input, and virtually no spatter.

Suitable for

CMT is a versatile process that suits a wide range of applications, including joint welding on stainless steel, overlap welding, aluminium welding including sheet thicknesses down to 0.3 mm, galvanised sheet metal, root welding, and brazed joints.

We find that the CMT process is a strong alternative to TIG welding with a cobot. With CMT, the wire feed is fully integrated into the Fronius CMT torch. With TIG cobot welding, an external cold wire feeder often needs to be added, which complicates both the programming and the freedom of movement of the cobot.

What does CMT deliver for you?

Up to 99% less spatter

No more hours of post-processing. The spatter-free material transfer means workpieces can move straight to the next step.

33% less heat input

This makes it a strong alternative to TIG welding. Less distortion, less rejection. Especially with thin sheet metal or aluminium, that makes a world of difference.

Up to 7x faster welding speed
At the same penetration depth, CMT allows you to weld up to 2x faster than with a conventional short-circuit arc process. On top of that, it's up to 7x faster than TIG welding.
Stable arc
Whether wire stick-out varies or the workpiece surface isn't perfect, the arc stays stable. CMT works in every position and on virtually any material.

Popular base configurations

Table system

For optimal stability and precision, we recommend using a table system. In this setup, the parts to be welded are brought to the cobot, making it ideal for series work and smaller products.

Ideal for small to medium-sized products

Use the table as a welding jig

Repeat weld function

Excellent starting point for welding automation

Good ergonomics for the welder

Mobile system

With this system, the cobot is brought to the product to be welded, making it well-suited for large and heavy workpieces. With magnetic bases, the cobot can be placed flexibly, quickly, and easily wherever needed.

Flexible and easy to use

Suitable for large workpieces

Often combined with a magnetic base

Can be used at various workstations

Brings the cobot to the product

Expansions

Track

The cobot is mounted on a track to increase reach
Allows you to work across multiple welding stations
Ideal for long weld lengths and large workpieces

Manipulator

Rotate and position products
Weld all sides of a product with a single setup
Adjust workpiece position for optimal welding angles

Plasma cutting

Consistent 3D cutting quality
Pre-set shapes like circles and squares/rectangles
Weld seam preparation for thick sheet metal
